Ananda Rasa Kirtan - ARK / David Estes

Ananda Rasa (the bliss of Divine rapture) Kirtan is led by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist David Estes who is currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area. David grew up in India and spent several years completely immersed in the practices of kirtan, sanskrit text chanting, meditation and service as a full-time resident in daily ashram life. Ananda Rasa Kirtan is rooted in traditional Sanskrit chants and mantras sung to original Indian raga melody compositions and explores the ecstatic and mystical moods of Bhakti in call and response chanting with the audience.

Clawhammer guitar technique I learned from Steve Baughman’s “Clawhammer Guitar : Power of Claw”. I went on to changed out the low E string for a high E string to drone the low string more like banjo. I then added “railroad spikes” in both the bottom and top E strings from A up to F so each string can be capoed individually for the drone notes required in the desired key. Hi David...i was looking for this version of shri hanuman chalisa ....but couldn't find it....only by grace of shri hanumanji and baba i clicked on this video..its transcendental....felt like maha anand ....jai sitaram hanuman

I don’t understand why more people don’t strum the guitar like this- it’s what I do and love the rolling sound that can be achieved. This video is one of the very few times (maybe first) I’ve seen someone approach the guitar with a “claw” style.
The learning curve of the clawhammer technique definitely required focused and consistent practice. More than I am used to and I stuck with it.
Usually when I see comments like this, I like to have an answer or at least figure one out because this is a great question, but I'm honestly not too sure why it's not a more popular, well known style. I've played guitar for about 8 years, mostly flamenco blues and bossa, but a few months back I thought I'd pick up the banjo. I originally just intended on learning Scruggs style (faster tempo, 3 finger picking), but the rhythmic possibilities and ease of learning for clawhammer drew me in really tight. Only then did I start seeing clawhammer guitar videos on RUclips. I haven't ever played clawhammer guitar nor thought about doing it til I started seeing these videos. And the first recorded use of clawhammer guitar was only in 1988! So, maybe part of its lack of relevancy is due in part to it being a "newer" playstyle for guitar. It could also be that the clawhammer style is associated so heavily with more niche traditional genres, i.e. American and Irish folk, that people might not be inclined to use it in more modern or varied genres. It's really fun and you can for sure get some nice sounds out of it. I'd advise you to look into "frailing" too, which is essentially clawhammer except you use the index for up-picking the melody and the middle for downward brushing. Also if you haven't tried before, PICK UP A BANJO!!! If you're already skilled at guitar clawhammer, playing banjo clawhammer probably wouldn't be too difficult a transition. Plus, the banjo is very fun to play. If you can't buy one, just go to a music shop that's got one and mess around for a while on it.

What hooks? I don’t see any hooks.
Called “railroad spikes” very small hooks added to the fretboard to hook the string under for capo effect. Can only really see them up close.

Back in the 80's I added a spike on the 5th fret of my '67 Tele so I could play bluegrass without having to drag my old Bacon banjo to gigs. I also added some muffling material under the bridge to imitate a banjo sound, otherwise the sustain was way to much and the whole thing sounded awful. They're are called railroad spike because they are originally meant for toy electric train tracks, I bought mine from a hobby shop back then.
